This year saw the inauguration, by the CRISTALINO LODGE, of its second observation tower, situated on the left bank of the River Cristalino, just 800 meters from the lodge’s main building. The tower is 50 meters high and has two platforms, to facilitate the observation and photographing of creatures dwelling in the crowns of the larger trees of the Amazon rainforest, especially birds and primates. Projecting above the treetops, the tower also provides the guests with the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the terra firma forest in the southern Amazon, with its great diversity and some very old and impressive trees, including the Brazil nut (Bertholletia excelsa), pipe bowl (Couratari macrosperma) and cancharana (Cabralea canjerana).
The new tower is even easier to climb, since the stairways are less steep and the steps are wider. A total of 24 reinforced cables ensure the stability of the tower from top to bottom, and guests can pause during the ascent to enjoy the view of the mountains and ocean of vegetation that stretches away in every direction. The first tower, built in 2000 with funds provided by Chip Haven, of Stanford University, is considered one of the best in South America. Now, these two towers within the Cristalino Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN) are literally the high point of the spectacular tours that take place in the early morning and late afternoon, when, in addition to being able to observe the birds and primates, one can enjoy the sunrise and sunset - a natural spectacle that adds a special extra touch to the Cristalino experience.
