Southern Amazon

THE FABULOUS AMAZON

THE CRISTALINO LODGE IS LOCATED IN THE SOUTHERN PART OF THE BRAZILIAN AMAZON, ONE OF THE RICHEST DESTINATIONS IN THE AMAZON TO OBSERVE BIRDS, MAMMALS, BUTTERFLIES AND ORCHIDS - DUE TO THE EXCEPTIONAL NUMBER OF SPECIES.

The Ecolodge is set within the first RPPN (Private National Heritage Reserve) in northern Mato Grosso, which enables visitors to immerse themselves in the wealth of flora and fauna of the region. We are situated beside the clean, calm waters of the majestic River Cristalino, which provides the only access to the hotel. The property contains several nature trails, where one can be sure to sight some of the special creatures that inhabit the Amazon region. It is a region that is recognized as one of the world’s most important, in terms of biodiversity. A large number of endemic species, such as the white-cheeked spider monkey (Ateles marginatus), red-nosed saki (Chiropotes albinasus), cryptic forest falcon (Micrastur mintoni), crimson-bellied conure (Pyrrhura perlata), and black-girdled barbet (Capito dayi), can be found only in this area.

Because this region lies in altitudes between 300 and 450 meters above sea level, the rivers do not generally flood the forests. For this reason, the predominant vegetation is the evergreen forest (terra firma) with tall and well formed trees. This undulating terrain produces different types of vegetation, each containing species that are adapted to those conditions. There are six different types of vegetation within the Cristalino private reserve. In addition, proximity to the Pantanal and the Cerrado creates a confluence zone for species of these important and very distinct biomes - so one can see within the Cristalino area many species that also inhabit the Pantanal and Cerrado, in addition to typical Amazon species.
